How many work hours in a year
2,080 before time off. Fewer once you take it.
Forty hours a week across fifty-two weeks gives 2,080. That figure is the one payroll and rate cards use, and it ignores every holiday and every day of leave. This calculator shows both numbers side by side: the standard one, and the one you actually work.

Baseline is your weekly hours across fifty-two weeks, the figure rate cards use. The second number takes your days off out of it. Both are rounded for display; the monthly figure is an average, since months hold different numbers of weekdays.
How it works
Three inputs, and the difference between them is the whole point.
Set your weekly hours
Forty is the full-time default in most places. Thirty-seven and a half, thirty-five and four-day weeks all change the baseline, so the field starts editable rather than fixed.
Add the days you do not work
Public holidays, paid leave and any unpaid days. They are counted in days and converted to hours using your own weekly figure, not a fixed eight.
Read both numbers
The baseline is what a rate card assumes. The actual figure is what the year holds once time off is taken out. The gap is usually between one hundred and two hundred hours.
Why this one
Three things annual-hours calculators usually skip.
Both numbers, not one
2,080 is the right answer to the question as asked, and the wrong answer to the question people mean. Hiding either one makes the page less useful, so both are shown.
Hours per day comes from your week
Most calculators convert a leave day at eight hours regardless of what you entered. On a thirty-five hour week a day is seven, and the difference across twenty days is a full working week.
The defaults are labelled, not hidden
Eleven holidays is the United States federal calendar and ten days is a common starting allowance there. Both are starting values, and the page says so rather than presenting them as facts about your job.
Frequently asked questions
How many work hours are in a year?
A full-time year is 2,080 hours: forty hours a week across fifty-two weeks. That is the figure payroll systems, salary conversions and rate cards use. It counts every week as a working week, so it sits above the hours anyone actually works.
How many hours do you actually work in a year?
Take 2,080 and subtract your time off. Eleven public holidays and ten days of leave at eight hours a day removes 168 hours, leaving 1,912. With twenty days of leave it is closer to 1,832. The number moves with your country and your contract, which is why the calculator asks instead of assuming.
How many work weeks are in a year?
Fifty-two on paper. After public holidays and paid leave it is nearer forty-seven or forty-eight, depending on your allowance. The calculator shows this as equivalent full weeks, so a part-time schedule converts cleanly.
How many working hours are in a month?
The annual figure divided by twelve, which is about 173 hours on a forty-hour week before time off. Counting a single month directly gives a different answer each month, because months hold different numbers of weekdays; the average is the more useful number for rates and budgets.
Why is 2,080 used if nobody works it?
Because it is a stable divisor. Converting a salary to an hourly rate needs a fixed number, and one that changes with each person's leave would make two colleagues on the same salary have different rates. 2,080 is a convention, not a measurement.
How many hours are in a year in total?
8,760 in a common year and 8,784 in a leap year: 24 hours across 365 or 366 days. That is the calendar answer, and it is rarely the one people want when they ask. A full-time work year is 2,080 of those hours, which is under a quarter of the total, and the number drops again once holidays and leave come out.

The estimate is the easy part
Knowing the year holds 1,912 hours does not tell you where they went. Worktivity records them as the work happens, so the annual figure is a total rather than an assumption.
