Reading the comparison

Pricing

Worktivity starts at $3.99 per user per month, against $6.42 per user per month for DeskTime. The DeskTime figure is its annual-billing rate, the lowest price it publishes, while ours is the monthly list price. Paid annually Worktivity drops to $3.32, so the real gap is wider than the numbers above. Both are billed per seat, so it grows with headcount.

Which one fits your team

Worktivity is the better fit if:

  • DeskTime tells you how the time went. Worktivity carries the same hours through to money: cost per task and project, billable amount, and payouts and invoices raised from the tracked time.
  • Not everyone has to install an agent. Time can be tracked in the web application from any modern browser, which matters for contractors and occasional collaborators.
  • Screenshot volume is not capped. Every plan records without a screenshot limit; what changes between plans is how long the images and activity data stay available.

DeskTime is the better fit if:

  • You want tracking that asks nothing of anyone. DeskTime's automatic capture, with no timers to start and no categories to maintain, is why most of its customers stay.
  • Part of the day happens away from the computer. DeskTime asks about offline time and folds it into the record; Worktivity does not.
  • Absences belong next to the hours. DeskTime's absence calendar and Pomodoro timer are built in and used daily by the people being tracked.

Switching from DeskTime

DeskTime exports the numbers cleanly, so the archive is straightforward. What does not travel is the absence calendar and the offline entries people typed in, so decide where those will live before you switch.

How the move usually goes

  1. 1

Export DeskTime reports for the period you need to keep, and note that offline entries and the absence calendar are records you will have to hold somewhere else.

  2. 2

Install the Worktivity agent on a pilot group and compare one full week side by side, especially the productive and unproductive split, because the two products categorise applications differently.

  3. 3

Cut over at the start of a month so the first Worktivity report covers a whole period, and let the DeskTime term run out rather than cancelling mid-way.

Questions people ask

The three that come up most often when a team is weighing this move.

Can DeskTime data be moved into Worktivity?

No importer exists. Export the DeskTime reports you want to keep and treat them as the archive for that period; Worktivity's record begins when its agent is installed. Running both for a week or two gives you an overlap you can check the numbers against.

Does Worktivity record offline time the way DeskTime does?

No. There is no prompt asking what you did away from the machine. Time is recorded while the agent runs, or entered in the web application, so work off the computer has to be logged rather than reconstructed.

Will the productivity percentages match what DeskTime showed?

They will not match exactly, and they should not be expected to. Each product decides for itself which applications count as productive. Worktivity reports utilisation as working, break and idle time, then splits working time into productive, neutral and unproductive, so compare the trend over a full week rather than single days.
