How do I send clock-in and clock-out updates to Slack?
Connect a Slack workspace and Worktivity posts clock-in, clock-out and break updates to the channel you choose. Only names, events, times and durations are sent.
- Web
Worktivity can post clock-in, clock-out and break updates to a Slack channel. You connect one Slack workspace, choose one channel and the events to send, and Worktivity writes a short message each time one of them happens. Slack is a notification target here, not a task source: nothing is imported from Slack and no time is written back to it.
Who can set it up, and on which plans?
Only owners and co-owners can connect Slack and change its settings. Slack notifications are included in the Free Trial, Growth and Pro plans. They are not part of Starter.
How do I connect Slack?
- Open Workspace settings, go to the Integrations tab and select Connect on the Slack card.
- Slack asks you to allow the Worktivity app in your Slack workspace. Review the permissions and allow.
- Back in Worktivity, open the Notifications section of the Slack connection and pick the channel that should receive the messages under Channel.
- Under Events, switch on the events you want to send.
- Select Save, then Send test message. A short message that starts with “Worktivity is connected” should appear in the channel within a few seconds.
The test message uses your saved settings, so save first: Worktivity asks you to save your changes before sending one. You can send a test message once every ten seconds; if you try sooner, Worktivity asks you to wait a few seconds.
Can I use a private channel?
Yes, but Slack only lets the app post where it is a member. Open the private channel in Slack and type /invite @Worktivity. Until you do, you cannot choose that channel: the list either leaves it out or shows “Invite @Worktivity to the channel first” next to it. If you try to save a private channel the app has not joined, Worktivity says the channel was not found or that the bot is not a member of it. Public channels need no invitation.
Which events can Worktivity send?
- Clock-in: a person clocks in. On by default.
- Clock-out: a person clocks out, with the time worked that day when it is known. On by default.
- Break started: a person starts a break. Off by default.
- Break ended: a person comes back from a break. Off by default.
- Late: a person clocks in after the shift start. Off by default.
- No-show: a person has not clocked in for a scheduled shift. Off by default.
- Missing clock-out: a person did not clock out on a shift day. Off by default.
Late, No-show and Missing clock-out are shift events. They appear under Events only while Shift scheduling is switched on for your organization. How to turn it on and assign shifts: How do I plan shifts for my team?
What do the messages look like?
- 🟢 Alex clocked in · 09:02
- 🔴 Alex clocked out · 17:43 · 8h 41m today
- ☕ Alex started a break · 12:30
- ▶️ Alex is back from a break · 13:00
- 🟠 Alex clocked in late · 09:25 (25 min late)
- ⚪ Alex has not clocked in for the shift on 2026-10-21
- ⚠️ Alex did not clock out on 2026-10-21
The format is fixed and cannot be edited. Messages arrive in the language of the person who connected Slack; the test message uses the language of the person who sends it.
Can I leave some people out?
Yes. Under People to exclude you can select up to 500 people. Nothing is posted for an excluded person, whatever the event.
What does Worktivity not send to Slack?
Only names, events, times and durations are sent. Screenshots, app usage and productivity scores never leave Worktivity. A Slack message carries the person’s name, the event, the time and, for clock-out, the time worked that day.
What if Slack is slow or the app was offline?
Messages go out shortly after the event, usually within a minute or two, and at most one per second per channel, so a crowd clocking in together can take a little longer. If a desktop app was offline and reports a clock-in, clock-out or break more than two hours late, Worktivity does not post it, so the channel is not filled with old news. Shift events (Late, No-show, Missing clock-out) are still posted up to 36 hours after the fact. Shift events are posted at any hour; the 22:00 to 07:00 quiet hours apply only to phone notifications and the daily email.
What happens if the connection breaks?
If Slack revokes the app or someone removes it from the Slack workspace, Worktivity can no longer post and the connection shows as needing attention. Owners and co-owners also get an email. Select Reconnect on the Slack connection to fix it. If the chosen channel is deleted or archived, or the app is removed from a private channel, the connection shows a problem and Worktivity says the channel is gone or can no longer be posted to. There is no Reconnect button for this: choose another channel under Notifications and save. If you disconnect and later connect the same Slack workspace again, choose the channel and events once more and save: the settings belong to the connection, and a new connection starts without them.
If your plan drops to Starter, the connection is paused and resumes when you are back on a plan that includes it.
How do I stop the messages?
To pause them, select Remove channel and save; nothing is posted without a channel. To end the connection, select Disconnect: Worktivity stops posting and deletes the access it holds. To be sure, you can also remove the Worktivity app in Slack’s own app settings.
What are the limits?
All messages go to one channel; you cannot route by person or event. Direct messages to individual people are not available. Slack notifications do not replace tracking: time is still recorded in Worktivity, and Slack only receives the short messages above.
