Start, end and break times
The shift starts when someone presses Clock in in the desktop app and ends at Clock out. Breaks start and end with one button and stop the work counter while they run. Where automatic clock-in is on, the Microsoft Store and Mac App Store apps start the shift as soon as they open.
Working, break and idle minutes
Every minute of a shift is recorded as working, on break or idle. A minute turns idle when the computer has had no keyboard or mouse input for longer than your threshold, which you set between 1 and 60 minutes; the default is 5. Idle minutes stay in the day's total but never count as working time.
The application in front
Each minute carries the application or website that was in the foreground. For websites only the host is recorded, never the full address. The productivity split and the apps report are built from this.
Activity level, not keystrokes
Activity level counts how many seconds in each minute had keyboard or mouse input, from 0 to 60. Which keys were pressed and what was typed are never read. It is best read as a pattern over weeks: a day of reading or meetings shows low activity without being a bad day.
Time the computer could not see
Meetings away from the desk, client visits and mornings the app was not running are added as manual time entries. An entry is a request: it reaches the timesheet once an owner, a co-owner or the person's manager approves it, unless your organization approves entries automatically.

Hours add up on their own, so the timesheet at the end of the week shows the week itself rather than what people remembered on Friday afternoon.

What it does not do
Worktivity time tracking is deliberately narrow in a few places.
No keystroke logging
Worktivity records whether the keyboard or mouse was used in a given second, never which key or what was typed. Message, email and file contents are not read.
Nothing outside a shift
Before clock-in and after clock-out the desktop app records nothing. While the screen is locked it counts no seconds and sends no minutes.
No automatic clock-out on the desktop
A shift left open in the desktop app keeps running while the computer is awake, and the extra minutes are recorded as idle rather than as work. A shift started in the mobile app ends by itself at midnight or after 10 hours.
